This Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. This is a relatively new festival to make its way onto the Christian calendar. The festival may be new, but its message is at the very heart of the Christian faith. When we look at all the scripture teaches us about Jesus the only possible conclusion is that He is the Messiah, the Christ, the king of heaven and earth. The ultimate irony is that in the Gospel this Sunday it is Pilate who calls Jesus a king, and that is at the trial where Jesus is condemned to die on the cross. It is the cross that is the throne of Christ, and thorny branches that are his crown. The contrast between Jesus and the rulers of this world could not be starker. Ultimately, we are called to turn our backs on this world and with Jesus turn towards the kingdom of God.
Christ our king does not ask that we support him in a regal lifestyle, but that we serve him helping his children in need. This is living the example our Lord has set in his service giving his life to give us salvation.
Thanks be to God.
